The Architecture Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a Matereality Lecture on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Lecture Room 1 (K1). The session, which took place from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., featured Daikin Air Conditioning as the guest speaker, presenting a special lecture on the ventilation system of hotel buildings.
The lecture was opened by Mrs. Nur Zahrotunnisaa Zagi, who explained the course contract of Matereality and the point system as a prerequisite for taking the Architectural Materiality course. The event was attended by undergraduate architecture students and was compulsory for those enrolled in the Comprehensive Technology Studio, as the hotel theme discussed in the lecture is aligned with the studio design project of the semester.
Before moving to the main topic, Daikin introduced the Daikin Designer Award (PDA) 2025, a collaborative design competition between Daikin Indonesia and Malaysia. This award features professional and student categories, with subcategories for completed projects and conceptual designs, as well as residential and F&B commercial building types. The theme this year is “Originality,” encouraging participants to create ideal living spaces that highlight originality amidst the rise of artificial intelligence.
In the main session, Daikin presented on Hotel, Villa, and Resort Application, covering key topics such as corrosion challenges of AC units in coastal areas, room control systems for energy efficiency, and centralized control for managing AC units across hotels and resorts. Specific AC product applications for guest rooms, suites, ballrooms, lobbies, and restaurants were also introduced, featuring anti-corrosion technologies and eco-friendly innovations.
The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students had the opportunity to further explore the practical implementation of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems in architecture, technical challenges in the field, and future prospects of building ventilation innovation.
In addition to broadening students’ knowledge, the lecture also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
Through this Matereality Lecture, architecture students at UGM are expected to not only strengthen their technical understanding of building ventilation but also connect academic knowledge with industry practices and global sustainability agendas.
