Here are some frequently asked questions by prospective students and parents.
- What are the registration procedures for the Bachelor of Architecture study program?
The university handles all admission selection, see http://um.ugm.ac.id/
- What to do if tuition fees (UKT) are too expensive/unaffordable? Are there any scholarships?
In the second semester, students/parents can apply for tuition fee reduction. Scholarships are also widely provided by universities, government, and private companies (see http://ditmawa.ugm.ac.id/category/infobeasiswa/ or https://ft.ugm.ac.id/category/beasiswa/)
In addition, students can also work part-time, please contact the lecturer or study program manager. Several UGM directorate offices also open many vacancies for part-time students, please check the directorate website regularly.

- Are prospective students required to be proficient in hand drawing?
It’s not mandatory, but there will be a matriculation program to improve drawing skills. It’s more important to have adequate spatial vision skills (imagining three-dimensional objects/spaces).
- How long does it take to study Architecture? And what is the average study period for students?
The normal study period according to the curriculum package is 4 years or 8 semesters.
- How can students graduate on time?
Students (supported by parents) affirm their intention to work as architects/in architecture-related fields after graduation. Parents encourage students to learn by improving their skills and building an architectural design portfolio (it is highly discouraged to pressure students to achieve a high GPA).
Always be active & interact with classmates, and seniors/juniors, because students usually get lots of information and support from this network, including being active in the student community (Keluarga Mahasiswa Teknik Arsitektur.)
Students routinely consult with the Academic Advisor (Dosen Pembimbing Akademik/DPA) regarding academic and non-academic problems. Academic issues, such as preparing an optimal study plan to complete studies. Non-academic issues, such as solutions and motivation if you find personal problems in life during your studies.
Parents need to ensure that they always receive a study report (Kartu Hasil Studi/KHS) at the end of each semester so that they can monitor their study progress. If there is a decline or problem, immediately contact the student’s Academic Advisor.
- What other costs must be paid during studies apart from the tuition fee?
After semester 4, students can participate in excursion activities organized by students and accompanied by study program lecturers. This field trip can be transferred to elective courses, but students are not required to take it. The cost varies according to the planned destination, such as Singapore, Malaysia, Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, etc. Each year, the Study Program and Department determine the amount of subsidy per student. In the future, this cost is expected to be integrated with the tuition fee or can be financed with alternative schemes (such as sponsorship or research funds).
- What tools/materials do parents/students need to prepare each semester?
Standard equipment such as pencils, rulers with handles, and rendering tools are required every semester (especially until semester 3). Currently, a technical drawing table (and drawing machine) is no longer recommended. In semester 3, students usually need a laptop with graphic specifications to study digital architecture in a mobile/flexible way. However, students can also use the Computer Laboratory. Students are advised to have a (standard) work area/desk at home. Maquette/model materials are also needed every semester but are flexible to adjust.
- What are the career opportunities after graduation?
According to the Undang-Undang Arsitek, becoming an architect requires completing a Bachelor’s degree program lasting at least four years, followed by one year in the Architect Professional Program. This is then supplemented by an internship under the supervision of a licensed architect. Afterwards, candidates are eligible to take the IAI competency test to obtain an architect’s license.
Additionally, graduates of the program can pursue professional careers in various fields, including interior design, construction supervision, researcher, lecturer, environmental supervision, government service, and creative industries such as photography, animation, graphic design, and more.
- Does the study program help students get jobs after graduation?
The study program fosters strong relationships with various architectural firms, studios, and practitioners, frequently inviting them as guest lecturers or speakers. However, personal skills and self-development remain crucial for students. Additionally, UGM provides career and job vacancy information, which can be accessed through individual SIMASTER accounts. UGM also organized annual events such as job fairs and career days. While job opportunities are abundant, many students choose to forge their own career paths, with a significant number of alumni pursuing careers overseas.
- What kind of activities can students participate in during their studies?
Students are encouraged to actively participate in the Keluarga Mahasiswa Teknik Arsitektur (KMTA) community, which fosters the development of excellent soft skills and creates a supportive environment. Each year, they organize the Wiswakharman Expo (WEX), a national-level exhibition that serves as a source of pride for the students. The study program also offers various academic activities, including MateREALity, Archilecture, Summer School, and International Collaborative Studio. Additionally, there are non-academic activities such as Desa Binaan, Sports Week, Arts & Musical Performance, and more.
